The Conrods Off-road Racing Official BAJA SAE Team (India & International) of SRMIST BAJA SAE
BAJA SAE challenges engineering students to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain and in some competitions, water. As in real work situations, these future engineers work together as a team to discover and resolve technical challenges in design, test, and manufacturing, as well as business issues. The most rugged of all the competitions, BAJA SAE also gives students the first-hand challenge of pursuing their passion while managing real-life demands and priorities. Each team’s goal is to design and build a prototype of an all-weather, rugged, single-seat, off-road recreational vehicle intended for sale to the nonprofessional weekend off-road enthusiast.
The Baja SAE Series will consist of seven competitions. Three competitions are held in North America under the sponsorship of SAE:
- Baja SAE Auburn - Hosted by Auburn University in the month of April.
- Baja SAE Maryland - Hosted by the University of Maryland - Baltimore in the month of May.
- Baja SAE Oregon - Hosted by the SAE Oregon Section in the month of June.
- Baja SAE Brazil – Sponsored and hosted by SAE BRASIL in the month of March.
- Baja SAE Korea – Sponsored and hosted by Yeungnam University, held in July.
- Baja SAE South Africa – Sponsored by Sasol and hosted by the Gerotek, held in October.
- Baja SAE India – Sponsored by Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and SAEINDIA and hosted by NATRiP, held in February.
BAJA SAE
In India, the history of the BAJA can be tracked down to when the Delhi College of Engineering students participated in the Mini Baja in 2002 and this was followed up by other brave attempts by other institutions like VIT, SVNIT, and RV College of Engineering who also took part in the subsequent editions of the international event.
Dr. Pawan Goenkaat the helm as the Chairman of the steering committee launched the BAJA SAEINDIA in 2007. As they ventured into the unchartered territory of holding a mega-event of this scale, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and NATRIP came forward to lend a helping hand through an earmarked zone at its upcoming proving grounds – NATRAX, situated at Pithampur, Indore.
Baja-SAE India is held annually in the month of February.
EVENT SCHEDULE
DAY 0
- On desk registration
- Pledge ceremony
- Technical Inspection:
- Weight check
– The first step is to check the weight of each vehicle.
- Go No Go test
– Vehicles were made to pass through a standard gauge as per the rulebook. The gauge is set at a width of 64 inches. Vehicles whose size exceeded the limit are rejected from the event.
- Engine test
– Engines are checked and certified, as per the rulebook, by the officials from Briggs and Stratton. Firstly the governor settings are checked where the accelerator cable needs to be attached to governor hole number 6. Secondly, the engine RPM is checked which should not exceed 3800 rpm. And finally, the air filter is checked which needs to be present and compulsorily be of Briggs and Stratton.
- Chassis and sub-system check
– This test checked the complete chassis and sub-system’s dimensions and compliances which were specified in the rulebook. The rules starting from the diameter of primary and secondary tubes to the template rule were strictly checked and observed.
- Safety scrutiny and harness test
– This test checked the safety precautions taken by the driver. The rulebook specifies a set of rules which a driver should follow for safety, such as a 5-second egress time. Those rules are strictly checked.
- Go-Green Award Presentation
– The Go Green award is an additional event that instructs teams to make a Catalytic Converter prototype that reduces the emissions from an engine. The presentation for the same is conducted on the 1st day of the event.
DAY 01
- Figure of eight
– The vehicles are to be driven over a very precise figure of 8 on the ground, to test the steering and handling.
- Brake Test
-Vehicles are made to accelerate for a particular distance and after achieving a speed of min. 45 km are stopped by applying brakes. All 4 wheels are supposed to lock on the application of brakes. On failing to comply with this condition a vehicle will be declared fail in this test.
- Acceleration Test
– The vehicle is supposed to accelerate over a distance of 150 feet on an off-road track. The grid position for the Endurance race is supposed to be decided with the help of this test.
- Design Evaluation
– The teams are supposed to present their design in front of a panel of judges for the design evaluation, based on which the best designs are selected for the Design Finals, and a winner is selected.
- Sales presentation
– For the Sales presentation, teams have to present the marketability of the vehicle to a panel of judges from the industry.
- Cost report presentation
– The cost report is presented in which the teams have to justify their expenses with respect to the vehicle.
DAY 02
- Hill Climb
– The vehicles had to tread over a distance of 150 m on a 29-degree inclined track. The track is a concrete track, made to test the Gradability of each vehicle.
- ManeuverabilityTest
–The driver has to maneuver the car on a track with a width equivalent to the width of the car. The track has very sharp turns, inclines on turns, sharp turns, pits bumps, etc. which checks the steering of the vehicle. The cars are supposed to clear the track in the least possible time with no penalty.
- Suspension and Traction Test
-A special track is made for this event which contains varying terrains like muddy, loose sand, gravel, etc. Along with the varying terrains, the track contains various obstacles like logs, rocks, a one-way ditch, an inclines track, and a hill. These check the suspension and steering of the vehicle.
DAY 03
